YEAR

2026

The Artisan Spectacle explores how premium travel television turns local culture, food and craft into highly curated visual experiences.

Using travel programming as a case study, the research examines how ideas of authenticity are constructed through cinematography, editing, presenter performance and carefully selected encounters with place.

Research Focus

Staged Authenticity
How apparently spontaneous encounters are shaped through production and editorial choices.

The Tourist Gaze
How destinations are framed through established visual expectations of beauty, tradition and difference.

Artisan Culture
How food, craft and rural labour become symbols of authenticity within premium travel media.

Responsible Storytelling
What this means for filmmakers representing real communities, cultures and places.

Relevance to Practice

The research directly informs my own approach to travel and documentary work. It encourages a more considered way of filming place, balancing visual appeal with awareness of how editing, framing and narrative choices can shape the audience’s understanding of a destination.
